Photorefractive Keratectomy

04-16-2010

Many people who are struggling with vision loss are forced to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses. An alterior option is laser eye surgery, either Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) or LASIK. PRK was the first adopted method used to treat low refractive errors in the eye. Each surgery has advantages and disadvantages.

Research has shown that LASIK patients experience less discomfort and experience an improvement in vision much faster than PRK patients. PRK tends to improve vision gradually and over a longer period of time. Surgeons usually choose PRK for patients who have thin corneas.

An advantage to PRK is that it is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, taking even less than a minute. No sedatives are necessary, and you can be awake the entire time without feeling anything. If needed, mild oral sedatives may be given, but generally the anaesthetic eyedrops are sufficient.

Always follow your doctor’s advice after surgery. They will recommend that you rest for about a week and avoid strenuous activity. Your eyes are just as vulnerable after the surgery as they were during the surgery, so precaution is a must to avoid delaying the healing process.

People usually achieve 20/20 vision or better, yet may still need to wear eyeglasses as they grow older. The prescriptions will be better, though, as your eyes have been improved in the past. As always, consult your doctor or specialist before considering laser eye surgery.
