Common Eye Disorders

Although there are many different things that can go wrong with your eyes, there are a couple of common eye disorders that should be on the watch-for list.  Catching these disorders early on in their developmental stages is the key to avoiding permanent and irreversible damage.

Glaucoma

One of the main common eye disorders is glaucoma.  This disorder occurs when the fluid pressure inside of an eye socket increase drastically.  Without proper intervention, the disease may develop further causing the primary nerve running from the eye to the brain, the optic nerve, to shrink.  A symptom of this common eye disorder is a loss of peripheral vision.

Cataracts

Another common eye disorder is the presence of a cataract, or clouding in the lens of your eye. A cataract is a cloudy or opaque area in the normally clear lens of your eye. Depending upon the size and location, cataracts can interfere with your normal vision and quickly become a hindrance in your everyday life. Common eye disorders such as this mostly develop in people over 55, but can occasionally be seen in infants and young adults. Cataracts form when the protein the lens clumps together with time. Researchers have discovered that nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc can reduce the risk of common eye disorders, including cataracts.

ARMD: Age-Related Macular Degeneration

There are two types of macular degeneration: wet and dry.  Nearly ninety percent of people with macular degeneration have the dry type, in which small, yellowish spots form underneath the macular.  These spots, called drusens, are thought to be waste accumulations that have not been cleared out by tears or natural antioxidants.   Drusens are believed to be waste products that accumulate because of lack of antioxidants to clear the waste from the eyes.  Dry macular degeneration can lead to the wet version of the common eye disorder
