Fitting Hearing Aids

When choosing a hearing aide, its fit around your ear should be a major consideration. An uncomfortable hearing aid will take away from any amount of hearing amplification that it gives to you. Once again, your decision should account for your ear shape and size, as well as your personal preference. The myriad of hearing aid styles that are available will foster a comfortable entry into the world of hearing aids. These different constructions and styles will give you different fittings, some of which can be further customized. The mechanisms within the hearing aid will not matter when fitting hearing aids; for the most part they all have similar parts to move sound from the environment into your ear. As with many electronic devices, hearing devices get more expensive the smaller and more compact they are.

The hearing aid fitting is the common denominator in choosing a hearing aid and maintaining a hearing aid. Read on to see what hearing aid styles you can generally choose from:

Completely inside the canal hearing aid

If you are looking for a hearing aid that is all the way inside your ear, virtually undetectable to the public, then this hearing aid is for you. With the smaller sized hearing aid come smaller batteries, so make sure that you are able to manipulate smaller objects. Also, your hearing aid will lack extensive features or adjustable parts due to its size.

Partly inside the canal hearing aid

An in-the-canal hearing aid is custom molded and fits partly in the ear canal, but not as deeply as the completely-in-the-canal aid. This hearing aid can improve mild to moderate hearing loss in adults.

	Full shell hearing aid

A full shell hearing aid tends to be more powerful and last longer than smaller, in-the-canal hearing aids. They are custom fit to perfectly contour the folds and crevices of your ear, giving a sense of security and attachment. With its size comes an ease of installation, the ability to add volume controls, and a larger, long lasting battery. Those with mild hearing loss, all the way to severe hearing loss, will have success with full shell hearing aides.

	Behind the ear hearing aid

Behind the ear hearing aids cater to a large spectrum of people. Formerly the most common type of hearing amplification device, hearing aids worn behind your ear are secured by a contoured hook and connected by a mold inside of your ear. This type of hearing aid is the largest and most visible to the public, but offers the most hearing amplification available. Newer models have become more and more streamlined as the technology debuts.

	Am I Experiencing Hearing Loss

Between 25 and 28 million people in America have some type of hearing loss; are you one of them? If one out of every ten people are experiencing a degree of hearing loss, chances are that you, or someone you know, is showing signs like these:

 Saying people don’t speak clearly

 Asking others to repeat themselves

 Become impatient, grumpy, or isolated

Volume issues with TV or telephones

Next to arthritis and hypertension, hearing loss is the third most serious health issue in senior citizens. It also affects over one million school-aged children and young adults. About ninety-three percent of those experiencing the signs of hearing loss can be helped by hearing aids or other, more preventative measures.

I Want To Fight Hearing Loss

Fighting hearing loss is as simple as educating yourself and finding a doctor near you that can provide the hearing devices that you need. Vision Hearing Health brings you the best of both worlds by giving you extensive guides to hearing loss and other important articles that will put you on the right track to better hearing health. We also have an intuitive Find a Doctor section that makes looking for a specialized ophthalmologist that much easier and convenient. Losing your hearing is not out of your control; take the right path and fight for your hearing.

Hearing Aid Maintenance

	Hearing Aid Maintenance

After your worthwhile investment into your hearing aid, you must protect your hearing helper with constant hearing aid maintenance. Maintaining your hearing aid will make a huge impact on the lasting hearing aid technology, plus the usability of the unit. Failing to properly maintain a hearing aid is the biggest factor in longevity, and it is up to you to take care of it.

How to Maintain a Hearing Aid

	Test Your Hearing Aid Daily

Before equipping yourself with your hearing aid, take a second and make sure that everything is sounding as it should. In order to get the clearest sense as to the functionality of your hearing aid, you must remove the rubberized molding and listen through your hearing aid stethoscope. Test each of the key sound structures such as "s", "sh", "eeee", "mm", and “puh” and make sure that you enunciate the syllables that are stressed. If it sounds the way you normally hear, then the first step of hearing aide maintenance is done!

	Check Your Hearing Aid Batteries

The hearing aid batteries can cause a malfunction right when the hearing aid is powered on. To make sure they are functioning properly, take out the batteries and inspect them, as well as the compartment. What you should be looking for is rust or corrosion. These signs, as well as loose or broken connections, will cause your hearing aid to buzz, lose power, and deliver a weak amplification signal. Moisture from water, sweat, or humid conditions are the main causes of corrosion inside the batter door. The easiest remedy to combat rust is to use an alcohol-dipped cotton swab and rub the rusty areas until they are clean. Make sure that no alcohol leaks into the interior of the hearing aid.

	Condensation and Hearing Aids

When moisture forms inside of your hearing device, the condensation can block the passage of sound completely. Inspect your hearing device for tiny droplets of water in and around crevices. If there seems to be moisture, use a blowing apparatus to release the moisture’s hold and dry your hearing aid. The hooks of the hearing device should also be inspected for moisture and cleaned on an as-needed basis.

Remove Your Hearing Aid Before Bed

It is very important to remove your hearing aid each night before you retire to bed. It is also the simplest hearing aid maintenance that you can do. Doing so will keep nighttime buildup from dirtying the hearing device. The rubber molding should be detached and wiped down, as well as the part that wraps around your ear (if applicable). This method will also keep your ear healthy and cleaner in the process.

	Hearing Aids

Purchasing a hearing aid is usually the first step toward a better quality of life through improved hearing. A better sense of hearing fosters a better relationship with others, as well as a personal enjoyment of life. Vision Hearing Health is your resource to learn all about fitting a hearing aid, learning how to choose a hearing aid, as well as how to buy a hearing aid. It is paramount that you find a specialist to guide you through the physical process of choosing a hearing aid, and we are here to get you moving in the right direction. Take charge and insure your hearing health for years to come!

	Hearing Aids Bring Healthy Lives

Do not linger on the social effects of having a hearing aid: they do not exist! Contrary to this popular mentality, almost 80% of people that are showing the signs of hearing loss avoid hearing aids for reasons that include dismal expectations, embarrassment, expenses, and denial. In fact, only about one in five people who need a hearing aid actually utilize hearing aid technology. Studies show that hearing-impaired adults with untreated hearing loss were more likely to report anxiety, paranoia, and depression and were also less likely to participate in organized social activities. In comparison with those that use hearing aids, the difference is night and day.

	Take Control of your Hearing

After high blood pressure and arthritis, hearing loss is the third most common chronic condition in the elderly. It is up to you to stop this epidemic and take control of your hearing. Take advantage of Vision Hearing Health and use our hearing aid resources to find the best hearing aid for your life. There is no time like the present; Find a specialist today!

Hearing Aid Technology

	Hearing Aid Technology

Hearing aid electronics are the functionality that controls how sounds are transferred from the ambiance into your ear. The sound is processed, amplified, and delivered, all in an almost immeasurable amount of time. All hearing aids amplify sounds, making them louder so that you can hear them better.
As analog technology is being phased out by many major manufacturers, digital technology is hitting the market hard, looking to put an end to the usability issues of analog hearing aids. Now, computer chips convert the incoming sound signals into readable digital code, then processes and transforms the audio into a specialized band based on your hearing loss. It also takes into account your attenuation needs, sounds going on around the area, and your settings.

	Hearing Aid Terminology

Along with understanding hearing aid technology, there are a few key terms that you should be made aware of. Vision Hearing Health, as well as many other ophthalmology entities, will often refer to these terms when describing the features and compatible technology of your hearing aid.

Feedback – Feedback occurs when a signal that has already been processed and amplified is picked up by the receiver. This creates a loop that results in a whistling sound that is generally unpleasant. This is a completely internal phenomenon that depends on the circuitry of the hearing aid unit. Most modern hearing aids are manufactured with feedback blockers that detect and eliminate feedback. Protecting your ears is very important, therefore hearing aid manufacturers make sure to eliminate feedback in however method, be it a feedback blocker or great wiring.

Volume Controls– Hearing aids that are larger in size, such as full shell hearing aids or behind-the-ear hearing aids, frequently have volume controls that increase the volume of the hearing aid. When speaking with someone that has a soft voice, this can be a simple yet effective way to receive that quick boost that you need.

Microphones – Most hearing aids have two microphones. One microphone receives input sounds from all directions. The second microphone, coined as a ‘directional microphone’, only focuses on sounds that come from the front, such as conversational communication.

Programs – Depending on the hearing aid, different listening programs can be initiated. Listening programs are configurations of the hearing aid’s reception in different sound environments. As you know, the different places in which you find yourself constitute different listening abilities. If you are in a crowded subway, there could be a setting that attenuates all but the directional microphone. Other situations call for and increase in just the multi-directional microphone. These listening programs are controlled either by a button directly on the hearing aid, or a small remote control. Some hearing aids allow you to configure the programs prior to their installation.

FAQ

	Hearing FAQ

What is the best hearing device on the market?

The only way to answer this question is to say that there isn’t a single device that can be considered the best. Sure, there are many different types of hearing aids, but there are also different types of hearing loss. Each hearing aid is geared towards helping a specific type of hearing discrepancy, so try out the different types and see what fits your needs.

Does Medicare cover hearing aid costs?

Medicare usually pays for hearing tests that are referred to by a physician, yet they do not cover the cost of a hearing device. If you have a different type of insurance then they may take care of a portion of the cost. Always consult your insurance provider before making a purchase.

How long do hearing aids last?

Hearing aids can last up to 5 years, but some makes and models may last over seven years. Hearing loss is a progressive disorder, and many hearing aids can be reprogrammed to provide more sound amplification. Keep this in mind when thinking about how to buy a hearing aid.

Do I need to wear two hearing aids or can I purchase just one?

There are many reasons that two hearing aids are better than one. First, the brain can interpret signals if they are received by both ears (cross-referencing). Also, with two hearing aids you will be able to localize sounds better. Last but not least, having an ear without a hearing aid will result in the deterioration of that ear faster than the aided ear.

How can I find an audiologist that can help me find a hearing aid?

We train audiologists, as well as ophthalmologists to provide hearing aid services. Use our helpful Find a Specialist page to find a specialized physician near you.

	Vision FAQs

What are the differences between and ophthalmologist, optometrist, and an optician?

This is a very common question that does not receive the attention that it should. An ophthalmologist holds a medical degree with at least 12 years of training beyond high school and has a license to practice medicine and perform many eye surgeries.
An optometrist has a specified degree in optometry. and is licensed to practice optometry. They have the ability to determine the need for glasses and contact lenses and screen for certain eye conditions.
An optician is trained to fit and dispense eyeglasses or contact lenses based upon a prescription from an ophthalmologist or an optometrist. They only require some college and actual on-the-job training.

What are the floating dots that I frequently see in my eye?

You are experiencing eye floaters, a harmless yet annoying condition that occurs in the eye. What you are seeing are small clumps of proteins that may appear as lines, dots, or any other shape. These can be cared for with proper dietary supplements and increased nutrient intake.

How often should I get a new pair of glasses?

It is important to visit your eye doctor at least once a year to see if your prescription has changed. You may not need new frames at all, just new lenses. Read our articles describing how to choose eyeglass lenses and how to choose eyeglass frames for detailed tips when it is time for a change.

My glasses are too thick and too heavy. Is there anything I can do?

Ask your physician for high-index lenses. They are much thinner and lighter, providing the same amount of correction.

	Hearing Loss and Deafness

Our sense of natural hearing is a very fine-tuned, intricate process. If at any critical point there is a malfunction or error, our hearing could be in jeopardy. To hear naturally, the entire system must work right and completely in sync. If a part of the inner, middle, or even outer ear is damaged or missing, a type of hearing loss may be present.
The beauty of regular conversations is often underestimated. When this facet of existence is lost, hearing loss is usually to blame. One of the signs of hearing loss is the inability to understand people unless you speak directly face to face. If you have trouble hearing dialogue at church, the movies, at work, or at home, then you should consult our helpful pages about hearing aids, as well as our Find a Specialist selector; this is a sign of major hearing loss and steps need to be taken immediately. To avoid the physically and emotional negativity associated with hearing loss, make the right decision, and don’t let another day without hearing go by.

How to Buy a Hearing Aid

How to Buy a Hearing Aid

Do you need a new hearing aid but don't even know where to begin the search? With the almost overabundance of brands, styles, features, shapes, and prices to choose from, learning how to buy a hearing aid is a necessity. Vision Hearing Health has taken this complicated process and formed these easy-to-follow guidelines so that when you are buying a hearing aid, you can be sure that you’ve made the best decision possible. The most important topics that we’ve narrowed your search down to are budget, strength, shape, and technology.

	Testing a Hearing Aid

The first and most important step when buying a hearing aid is to take a hearing test at the office of an ophthalmologist or audiologist. Use our Find a specialist tool to find a helpful location near you. The hearing aid style that is best suited for you will be a combination of your ear shape and the comfort that you feel, and the strength of the hearing aid. The hearing professional will be able to report your hearing needs and outline your specific type of hearing loss.

	Financing Hearing Aids

It is important to remember when buying a hearing aid that every model will give you back that important sense that you have been longing. Keeping that in mind, hearing aid prices can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars for each ear. If your hearing loss is mild to moderate, then the more expensive models will do you no better than if you kept the price low.
Your budget should not have to change to accommodate your signs of hearing loss. Instead, when thinking about how to buy a hearing aid, keep your budget intact and study the following types of hearing aids. Choosing a hearing aid solely due to price can be a grave mistake.

	Hearing Aid Strength

Your type of hearing loss will be the deciding factor in how much amplification that you need in a hearing aid. Hearing aid technology plays a large factor in this as well since the advent of smaller microchips and processors have brought hearing aids to the forefront of technology. The nature or class of hearing loss you have is something else to consider. Do you have trouble hearing low frequencies or high frequencies? Is speech a problem for you or is it that far away sounds never reach your ears?
Hearing aids are made to provide powerful amplification is a certain frequency, so look at the specs of that hearing aid you have been looking at. Your amplification choice is critical in buying a hearing aid. Your hearing device must be powerful enough to reach the greatest point of loss without strain, and moreover, continue to grow and assist you through the progression of hearing loss.

	Analog or Digital

Long ago, the majority of hearing aids were all analog. Today, most hearing aids are digital due to their ability to be customized. Analog hearing aids come ready for the user, and cannot be changed. Another drawback of analog hearing devices is the fact that most amplify all of the incoming sounds and do not discriminate amongst them. For example, hearing a conversation in a noisy room may be more difficult with an analog hearing aid since it will make all incoming signals loud. Despite these features, some people prefer analog hearing aids that have different program setting determined by the situation. Some companies still make analog hearing aids, and other make digital hearing aids that attempt to replicate the circuitry of analog hearing aids. To find what’s best for you, try them on and compare.

The world around us is a beautiful face, and there is no reason that all of the colors and shapes that Mother Nature has provided for use be unseen. The most basic way to help our existing vision do more for us is to wear a pair of eyeglasses. Glasses are not a new invention by any means, but to this day they still help millions of people around the world see better. Given that fact, choosing eyeglasses should be a process that is taken seriously with much thought. We save you the research and give you these general steps to follow when choosing eye glasses.

	Be Sure of the Fitting
Since you will be wearing your new eyeglasses for a while, make sure they are adjusted correctly the first time. The nose pieces should be snug, but not tight to the point that they leave an indentation on your nose. This is a very crucial step in choosing eye glasses, as a set of uncomfortable glasses will turn you away from wearing them; no matter if your loss of vision causes you anguish. Use our How to Choose Eyeglass Frames guide for further tips.

How to Choose Eyeglass Frames

	How to Choose Eyeglass Frames

Comfort is what makes a great pair of eyeglasses, and the type of frame is responsible for most of this characteristic. The way an eyeglass frame caresses the bridge of your nose and hugs your ears is an everyday reminder as to why you chose eyeglasses over contact lenses. For many, contact lenses are not even an option, or they dislike the idea of poking themselves in the eye everyday to put them in. Sanitation is also a constant issue, as is the price of replacing a lens when it blows out of your eye during a walk in the park on a windy Fall day. We know that eyeglasses are important, and we have the honor of showing you how to choose eyeglass frames.

Plastic, metal, and titanium eyeglass frames allow for individualism to be thoroughly expressed. When you are choosing eyeglass frames keep in mind that their frame shape and design are displayed front and center. How to choose eyeglass frames quickly becomes a daunting task when number of available frames is established, and Vision Hearing Health puts the main categories in plain English. As mentioned above, the most comfortable frames are the type you should stick with, and these descriptions should put you on the correct path.

	Plastic eyeglass frames

Plastic frames are the most economical eyeglass frame choice, and sometimes can be the best overall pick. Being inexpensive, they may be the more stylish pick as the “vintage” genre never grows old. Another positive when choosing plastic eyeglass frames is their availability. Find a specialist near you and they will surely have quite the selection.

Metal eyeglass frames

Metal eyeglass frames tend to be thinner and more streamlined. Their presence on your face is less of a hindrance. Also, when you look at how to choose eyeglass lenses, you will see that your options will expand with metal frames. Metallic eyeglass frames also give you that shiny finish for less than titanium eyeglass frames. Many prescription glasses are made from metal eyeglass frames.

Titanium eyeglass frames

The best is not always the most expensive, but titanium eyeglass frames come very close. Made from one of the strongest materials in the world, titanium eyeglass frames are a great investment. If you have the budget, thinking about how to choose eyeglass frames is short lived as corrosion resistance and extra long-lasting construction hold its life alongside yours. If you drop them, sit on them, or accidentally step on them, chances are you will still have a great pair of titanium eyeglass frames.

How to Choose Eyeglass Lenses

	How to Choose Eyeglass Lenses

More than 80 percent of all eyeglasses worn in recent times are constructed with plastic lenses, but plastic lenses have not always been the lens of choice. The glass lens was the most frequently used until around 1952, when plastic lenses were introduced. How to choose eyeglass lenses has never been the same. The plastic eyeglass lenses rapidly grew in popularity because of it being much lighter and less fragile. Nowadays, the number of plastic eyeglass lenses that are produced far outnumbers the amount of glass eyeglass lenses.

	Polycarbonate Eyeglass Lenses

When choosing eyeglass lenses, polycarbonate eyeglass lenses should be a consideration for children. They are lightweight and virtually shatterproof, maintaining optimum comfort. Many polycarbonate lenses are featured in different sunglasses and shades, but those can also be converted into prescription sunglasses with the addition of prescription polycarbonate eyeglass lenses.

	Glass Eyeglass Lenses

Glass eyeglass lenses provide great optical quality, and along with it a scratch-resistant surface. Most premium eyeglass lenses made from glass are free of distortion with borosilicate optical glass and offer the most premium level of visual acuity available today. It would be hard not to Find a Specialist without great corrective glass lenses, all of which can pass a drop ball test, ensuring glass lenses that will last a lifetime.

	Plastic Eyeglass Lenses

Plastic eyeglass lenses are an inexpensive alternative for a lens material. Although half the weight of your average glass lens, plastic lenses are easier to scratch and chip. Think carefully about the possibilities of having to replace your plastic eyeglass lenses. High prescription patients usually prefer to use prescription plastic eyeglass lenses that are thinner. Labeled as Hi-Index Lenses the higher the index of the lens, the thinner it is manufactured.

Common Eye Disorders

	Common Eye Disorders

Although there are many different things that can go wrong with your eyes, there are a couple of common eye disorders that should be on the watch-for list. Catching these disorders early on in their developmental stages is the key to avoiding permanent and irreversible damage.

	Glaucoma

One of the main common eye disorders is glaucoma. This disorder occurs when the fluid pressure inside of an eye socket increase drastically. Without proper intervention, the disease may develop further causing the primary nerve running from the eye to the brain, the optic nerve, to shrink. A symptom of this common eye disorder is a loss of peripheral vision.

	Cataracts

Another common eye disorder is the presence of a cataract, or clouding in the lens of your eye. A cataract is a cloudy or opaque area in the normally clear lens of your eye. Depending upon the size and location, cataracts can interfere with your normal vision and quickly become a hindrance in your everyday life. Common eye disorders such as this mostly develop in people over 55, but can occasionally be seen in infants and young adults. Cataracts form when the protein the lens clumps together with time. Researchers have discovered that nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc can reduce the risk of common eye disorders, including cataracts.

	ARMD: Age-Related Macular Degeneration

There are two types of macular degeneration: wet and dry. Nearly ninety percent of people with macular degeneration have the dry type, in which small, yellowish spots form underneath the macular. These spots, called drusens, are thought to be waste accumulations that have not been cleared out by tears or natural antioxidants. Drusens are believed to be waste products that accumulate because of lack of antioxidants to clear the waste from the eyes. Dry macular degeneration can lead to the wet version of the common eye disorder

As you can see, common eye disorders are nothing to ignore. For more information about common eye disorders, Find a Doctor near you and discuss your personal needs.
